Protect Your Dog After a Swim

Dogs love a good swim, especially during the summer months. However, it’s important to remember that after a swim, your furry friend needs some extra attention. As much as dogs enjoy a dip in the water, their paws and coats can become susceptible to infections and illnesses if left to dry on their own.

In this blog post, we’ll discuss the ways you can protect your dog after a swim so that they can continue to enjoy water activities once the heat strikes.

Rinse and Dry Paws

After a swim, be sure to rinse your pup’s paws with fresh water to get rid of any leftover chemicals, saltwater, ticks, or other debris. Check for any small cuts or scratches and wipe them clean using an antiseptic solution to avoid any infections.

Once done, remember to dry the paws thoroughly with a clean towel. Wet paws can become irritated and prone to infections, especially if your dog has long or dense fur.

To prevent this, you can try using a blow dryer to dry your dog’s paws properly.

Check and Clean Ears

Water can easily get trapped inside your pet’s ears, which can lead to painful infections. So, after swimming, make sure to check and clean your dog’s ears with a cotton ball or soft cloth.

Veterinary ear cleaning solutions can also help in keeping them bacteria-free.

Ear infections can be painful, so it’s essential to be observant of your furry friend’s behavior and to get them treated immediately if you notice any signs of ear infections.

Brush and Bathe Coat

After swimming, your dog’s coat can become matted and difficult to brush. Try using a conditioning spray or leave-in conditioner spray on your dog’s coat before brushing. It will help to avoid any tangles or matting.

Lather your dog with a mild shampoo and conditioner to remove any chemicals, bacteria, or algae.

Towel and blow-dry your pet to avoid being damp for too long.

Offer Fresh Water

After a swim, your dog can become thirsty, and drinking saltwater or chlorinated water can be harmful to their health. So, always bring fresh water or set up a water source for your dog.

Dehydration and drinking contaminated water can lead to an upset stomach, diarrhea, and other health issues.

Check for Signs of Infection

After a swim, be watchful for any signs of illness such as lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, or loss of appetite.

Any of these symptoms can indicate a possibility of illness or infection. Take your furry friend to the vet if any of these symptoms persist.

Protect Your Dog After a Swim

Going for a swim is great for your furry friend – it’s an opportunity for them to burn calories, get some exercise, and have fun. However, remember that proper care after a swim is crucial to your dog’s health.

Rinse and dry paws, check and clean ears, bathe and brush coat, provide fresh water, and keep an eye out for signs of infection.

With these tips, your furry friend will be ready to take a plunge in the water while staying safe and healthy.
